The OnPoint spotlight is an ongoing blog series where we take the opportunity to highlight one of our employees. Our spotlights take a closer look at the drive and personality of individuals on the OnPoint team. It is one way we show our appreciation for the hard work and achievements of our employees, while also helping our community get to know the people who make things happen here at OnPoint.
This week’s employee spotlight is Stephanie Cannon, our Business Deposit Officer at our Montgomery Park headquarters. Stephanie recently joined OnPoint earlier this year in January.
Here is what Stephanie shared with us about herself.
What were you doing before joining us here at OnPoint?
Before coming to OnPoint, I worked 12 years at a local community business bank, where I helped business clients both internally and externally with their banking needs. Specifically, I focused on the deposit side of the business. In one major project, I created, implemented and trained a sales and service program to bankers internally, helping the organization create a more dynamic banking experience for the businesses it touched.
What are your goals within your new role?
I have personally been a member of OnPoint for about 25 years and have always loved the experience I received as a member! In my new career venture, I learned the Business Lending group was growing and I wanted to help contribute to the success! With Business Lending well on its way to success, I’m looking forward to adding my business banking experience to the deposit and operational side of business banking. So many great processes and ideas are already happening within this organization. I hope to build on and enhance the services we can offer our business members, as well as support, streamline and grow how we internally help businesses on a day-to-day basis.
Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
I am a long-time Oregonian who moved from Colorado when I was younger! I have two teenagers, a 16-year-old son, a 13-year-old daughter, and a fiancé that keep me busy. I spend much of my time with the kids’ activities, which means watching baseball or attending a dance competition. We all love to eat sushi whenever possible, golf, watch movies, and spend time with family and friends. My fiancé and I hope to travel someday, tropical locations are our favorite, and I want to get to Europe. I try to exercise outdoors when I can and have a silly personal goal to run a marathon at some point in my life! We shall see!
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about education! I have kids so of course, I preach the importance of learning and school in the traditional sense, but I think learning is much bigger than that. Learning is a commitment to improving yourself each day and challenging yourself to get better in even the littlest ways. It’s helping others by sharing what I know or have experienced while in turn, learning from others and keeping an open mind.
What is the “nerdiest” thing you do in your spare time?
While I am a very social person by nature, I also enjoy doing some very introverted things in my spare time. I consider myself a bit of a math and science nerd, so anytime I can put something together or take it apart, I am in. My first three years of college were in Mechanical Engineering so solving problems is in my blood. I love to read, and my favorite gift of 2017 was the Kindle I bought myself, it goes everywhere with me! My favorite show of all time is The Big Bang Theory; some might say it is unrealistic/stereotypical, but I love the characters and the science; it makes me laugh and I own every episode!
If you could be on any TV game show, which would it be?
I have always loved Wheel of Fortune. I remember watching it as a kid with my family, trying to solve the puzzles before my brother! The fact that it is still on today and I can watch the same Pat and Vanna with my kids makes it unforgettable!
What is your favorite travel spot?
Favorite travel spot is easy – Kauai, Hawaii! It is my most memorable vacation and the one spot where I would retire, and I hope to someday. I love the laid-back feel, the one-way 25 mph bridges to get around the island, and of course the amazing people and beaches. I think my fiancé and I had our own personal happy hour at sunset on every beach on the island!
What is a lesson from your career that you would like to share?
Things in life can happen unexpectedly that change the path you are following at any given time. While this may feel uncomfortable, it is also an opportunity to challenge yourself, grow and do more than you ever thought you could. Staying in our comfort zones is safe, but also can slow our growth. In the times I have stayed comfortable, I have missed opportunities both personally and professionally, while when I have embraced change and what it can teach me, I discover I could do more than I thought I could!
Anything else that you would like to share about yourself?
I like to be involved with my community and give back when I can, whether that is taking my kids with me to volunteer, attending fundraising events in our community, or giving my time to local organizations that could use the help. I currently sit on the Board of Directors for two local construction non-profits, as well as my own personal Home Owners Association.
